pillars of learning

SELF-DIRECTED

Humans are natural learners. When children get to follow their passions, they engage deeply, learning more quickly and thoroughly – covering years of content in weeks once they choose to learn it.

INTENTIONAL CULTURE

At RLC, kids feel they are heard, they belong, and they make a difference. As social creatures, we thrive in this kind of vibrant community which builds our confidence, heightens our communication skills, and calls forth our best selves.

AGILE

We use practical and concrete tools to make these lofty-sounding ideals real and reliable. These tools and practices provide visible feedback, effective self-management, clarity of purpose, and easy integration of new patterns as needs change.

what we do

Elements of our experiential, project-based curriculum include:

Project Time
Learners choose a project to work on over the course of 8 weeks.  Then, kids exhibit their work at our quarterly showcases.

Units of Study + Offerings
We have a number of weekly reoccurring offerings made by our dedicated and knowledgeable facilitators In addition to these offerings, facilitators get to know their students in order to help guide students through their own project on a shared topic and framework. This in-depth project work covers curricular areas such as art, research, writing, science and history.

Open Studio
Learners pursue an intention or project of their choosing in our resource rich learning environment. They have access to our green screen, sewing area, laptops, art supplies and more.

Field Experiences

Learning happens everywhere! We intentionally leave the familiar grounds of our community and pursue experiences in the natural and cultural landscape around us. Field Days are some of the most exciting and valuable days for connection and learning.

Community Caretaking

Our community shows great respect for ourselves, each other and our space. Each learner plays a role in caring for their community members and the spaces they occupy.  Our motto is to “leave it better than you found it.”

culture creation

Many people imagine that culture is something that we must simply accept, that it is unchangeable. The fact is, we can create and change culture intentionally, especially within a smaller community, such as a business or school.

This phenomenon has become more apparent since the advent of the internet, which made a variety and diversity of subcultures more visible.

Embedding values and behaviors into the culture allows us to operate without an oppressive number of rules or overbearing structure. When the created culture becomes the new norm, the need to manipulate others’ behavior through punishments, incentives, or rewards is diminished.

Because everyone is participating in the culture creation, everyone is invested in supporting it.

Tools that facilitate intentional culture creation serve to make implicit cultural norms explicit, help us practice new patterns of behavior through social agreement, and enhance accountability using increased visibility of intentions and results.

Why are the programs age mixed?

Segregating people into age cohorts, a practice that really only happens at school, limits their exposure to accessible role models and their opportunities to teach skills they’ve acquired. In an age-mixed environment, older students learn patience and compassion while supporting the younger students. Younger students watch and emulate older students. Everyone gets practice both teaching and learning from people with varying skill levels, learning styles, and attention spans. The results tend to be awe-inspiring.
