Recess First: Cultivating Creativity and Growth Through Play

At Radiant Collective, we start each day with a commitment to what truly matters: play. Before diving into our ability-leveled small group academic tutoring, we begin with open studio time—what we sometimes call our 'recess first' approach. Here, children have the freedom to explore, create, and engage in self-directed and project-based learning. This isn’t just a warm-up; it’s the heart of our mission. We believe in honoring childhood by giving kids the space to play, explore their passions, and choose their path.

As Fred Rogers beautifully put it, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” We couldn’t agree more. Play is essential to a child’s development, fostering creativity, problem-solving skills, and emotional resilience. It’s through play that children learn to navigate the world, understand themselves, and connect with others.

Even during our small group tutoring sessions, play remains a cornerstone. We incorporate playful elements into academic learning, making it engaging and fun while still focused on mastery. Our approach is tailored to each child’s ability rather than their age, allowing them to excel in subjects where they shine and receive support in areas that challenge them. This differentiation helps children build confidence and a love for learning.

At Radiant Collective, whether we’re in the studio, on the playground, or in a tutoring session, our goal is to empower our RAD kids. We support them in their pursuit of passions and play, ensuring that learning remains a joyful, intrinsic, and dynamic experience. After all, we believe that the freedom to play and explore is not just a part of childhood—it’s the foundation for lifelong learning.

EPCOT Excursion: France Pavilion

This past Monday, Radiant Learning Collective embarked on our very first EPCOT Excursion, and it was nothing short of magical! With eight families in tow, we set out to explore the beautiful France Pavilion, and wow, did we make some incredible memories.

We kicked off the day with a visit to the Palais du Cinéma, where we settled in to watch the timeless Impressions de France. The experience of watching the film in the morning, at the start of our visit, made the Pavilion's history and culture come alive in a truly special way.

After the show, we interacted with cast members at KIDCOT, giving the kids a chance to learn more about French culture firsthand. They asked questions, practiced a few French phrases, and even picked up some fun facts about life in France.

Next, we headed back in to the lobby of Palais du Cinéma to take on an interactive puzzle hunt, exploring the “Tales As Old As Time: French Storytelling on Stage and Screen” exhibit.

Our adventure continued with a Family Scavenger Hunt, where kids and parents alike scoured the pavilion for hidden landmarks, artworks, and special features. There was much excitement as each family soaked in the charm and beauty of this little slice of France.

No trip to France would be complete without sampling some delicious food, and many of our families savored every bite at the pavilion’s creperie and bakery. From buttery croissants to rich, creamy desserts, it was a true taste of French culinary delights.

For our young artists, we had a special treat: a watercolor painting session en plein air along the "Seine," just like Monet. The children’s creativity flowed as they captured the pavilion's picturesque scenes on their canvases (or maybe just all their excitement in the moment!).

All in all, our first EPCOT Excursion was a huge success! We can't wait to do it all over again next month when we journey to the Morocco Pavilion for another day of learning, exploring, and, most importantly, making memories together.

Join us for our next adventure—Morocco awaits!
