A Walk in the Woods
What started out as sharing a story with friends, quickly turned into a mini camping trip, complete with a walk in the woods! One student decided to bring in and share a favorite book, The Camping Trip by Jennifer K. Mann. After she read the book out loud, she demonstrated how to build a s'more (as shown in the book). According to the instructions, everyone needed a roasting fork. So that meant a quick trip across the parking lot and into the woods...
Students explored the clearing area, finding a wide variety of sticks and things. I asked everyone to keep an eye out for pinecones to use in our science experiment later that afternoon. We found vines with thorns, palms, sticks, pine straw and pinecones. As we climbed through the bushes, we were transported into the forest like the girls in the book. Each new discovery was exciting and special.
As we ventured back inside, we set up the campfire rug and "roasted" marshmallows for our s'mores. Cardboard made great graham crackers and brown construction paper for the chocolate. Maybe not as delicious as real s'mores, but just as fun!
