To kick off the new year, our adventurous crew of families gathered at the entrance of the Norway Pavilion in EPCOT, ready to explore the rich culture and history of Norway. With excitement in the air, we began our journey through the Norway Pavilion with a walking architectural tour, diving into the fascinating world of traditional Norwegian design.
Our first stop introduced us to Norway’s iconic grass-roofed houses, a brilliant example of eco-friendly architecture that has been used for centuries to insulate homes through harsh winters. From there, we strolled through the charming fishing villages, learning about the deep connection Norwegians have with the sea. We wrapped up our tour at the stunning Stave Church, marveling at its intricate wooden carvings and Viking-inspired design. The kids were amazed to learn that some real Stave Churches in Norway have stood for nearly 1,000 years!
Next, we stepped inside Oaken’s Trading Post, where we immersed ourselves in the colorful world of rosemaling, a traditional Norwegian folk art known for its flowing floral patterns. Our mini pop-up gallery allowed the kids to admire authentic rosemaling designs before picking up paintbrushes and trying their hand at this beautiful art form. It was a joy to see their creativity shine as they swirled and flourished their own designs onto paper.
With our artistic energy flowing, we made our way to KIDCOT, where the children had the unique opportunity to interview a local Norwegian. They asked thoughtful questions about life in Norway, the northern lights, and even the country’s favorite winter sports! These conversations made the culture come alive in a way that books simply can’t.
Afterward, families embarked on a scavenger hunt, searching for hidden gems throughout the pavilion. Of course, no trip to Norway would be complete without a stop for food! The overwhelming favorite? The legendary School Bread—a delicious custard-filled pastry topped with coconut that quickly became a must-try treat for everyone.
The learning continued in the Stave Church Gallery, where we explored Norse mythology through an engaging puzzle hunt. The kids loved piecing together stories of Odin, Thor, and Loki, making connections between mythology and modern pop culture.
To finish our adventure on a high note, we set sail on Frozen Ever After, where we laughed and sang along with Elsa and Anna on their magical journey through Arendelle. It was the perfect way to wrap up a day filled with culture, history, and of course, a little Disney magic!
Overall, our Norway excursion was a fantastic blend of education and fun, bringing history and tradition to life in a way that engaged and inspired both kids and parents alike. We can’t wait for our next adventure—China Pavilion in February! Stay tuned for more details on what’s in store!
